ThermaSMART RISE – phase-change cooling of high-power electronic devices
The Objective of the Project ThermaSMART RISE is to create an international and intersectoral network of organizations working on a joint research program in the area of phase-change cooling of high-power electronic devices.
Modern microprocessors in smart-phones, high-performance computing clusters or advanced electronic equipment in space have a common need :
increased parallel functionality at top processing speed and durability. Maintaining top processor speeds generally means high power consumption which comes at a cost: power dissipation and heating.
In order to sustain high-speeds and reliable operation, this heat must be dissipated ideally at the same rate as it is generated.
The current state-of-the-art conventional air-cooling is ineffective with 40% of air not playing a role in dissipating heat.
